2017 Western District Competition Report

Our third and final District competition took place on Sunday 5th March over at Ravenscraig Sporting Facility in Motherwell, and boy, it was a big one!!!  48 competitors, 15 ladies and 33 gents took to the platform, many for the first time.

Our 93kg and above gents kicked off the day with the ladies and the lighter gents following in the afternoon.

Waking away with the best male lifter trophy was Junior lifter Callum Crozier, who finished on a 250kg squat, 185kg bench (Scottish Junior record) and a 288kg deadlift (Scottish Open Record), giving him a 723kg total (Scottish Open Record), and as if that wasn’t enough, Callum also went 9 for 9!!

A few of our gents also went home some new records.  Former World Champion, M2 lifter John Maxwell went home with 3 new Scottish Equipped Open records for his 220kg squat, 150kg bench, and 590kg total.  Junior lifter Kieran Mellon, took a new Scottish Open record 182.5kg squat, and a Scottish Junior record for his 505kg total.  Sub Junior lifter Lewis Kelly, got a Scottish Junior record for his 110kg bench, and Kilmarnock Weightlifting Club’s Robert Love took home 2 new Master Records, in his first competition as an M1 for his 260kg squat and his 672.5kg total.  Finally, seasoned lifter Arthur Cowley, got 3 new Scottish Masters records for his 210kg squat, 252.5kg deadlift, and 607.5kg total.

Now onto the ladies.  Making her debut on the platform, was Steph Dekker from Fortius Scotland in Cambuslang.  Steph is well known in the Cross Fit world, and it’s clear that the hard work she has put in for that, has transferred across to powerlifting.

Coming in bang on weight, Steph took the best female lifter trophy with a 150kg squat, 92.5kg bench and 170kg deadlift, giving her a 412.5kg, and an impressive 443.01 Wilks, not to mention, Steph’s bench, deadlift and total are new Scottish Open Records.

Amber Brown from 3 Lifts Livingstone took home a new Scottish Junior record for her 52.5kg bench.  Greenock Barbell Sub Junior Christy McCart, swept the board of Junior records with her 110kg squat, 52.5kg bench, 135kg deadlift and 297.5kg total, and returning after being out for a year due to injury, Forge Powerlifting’s (and SPs General Secretary) Joanna Jack took home 3 new Scottish Master records for her 130.5kg squat, 157.5kg deadlift and 252.5kg total

Lastly, a shout out to the lifters that went 9 for 9 – Johanna Platt, Connie McCallen and Robert McMillan.

All in all a great competition, and as usual a huge thanks to the people that makes it possible – the table team, referees, spotters, loaders and everyone else who helps out behind the scenes.  Without you, SP could not function.
